Old montreal's andrew frederick gault building.
Hotel Gault, Canada's definitive boutique hotel, is located in a five storey historic edifice in Old Montreal's booming west-end. In 1871, A.F. Gault commissioned J.J. Browne to build a majestic headquarter for his flourishing import/export textile business. Influenced by the Haussmann architecture of contemporary Paris, Browne proposed, for the façade, a Second Empire-style, featuring vertical pilasters and floral details carved into Champlain blue-gray limestone. The elegant corner door invites guests into the large open lobby, where we find the magnificent 19th century cast-iron pillars, the sole remaining interior element from the original design. The willowy elegance of these pillars, which are also located in certain suites, served as the main inspiration for this modern boutique hotel project. In the lobby, these columns are harmoniously paired against modern architectural mat erials, such as concrete and hot rolled steel. The lobby features an array of colourful chairs and a single bar/reception area that serves as the lobby's centerpiece.
A timeless contemporary ambiance
The inspiration for the interior design of Hotel Gault stems from the building's original cast iron columns and its vast windows that flood every room with an abundance of natural light. Within each of these 30 bright loft-style spaces, architects have selected the warmness of white oak panels and designed custom built-in furniture to create modulated walls. The wood grain texture plays off soft voilages over the French windows, to give each room a charming ambiance within this minimalism style interior.
Modern design classics
Furniture pieces have either been custom made in white oak or carefully chosen from modern design classics. Those lovely curved lounge chairs in the lobby (aptly-named Orange Slice) are re-editions of French designer Pierre Paulin's 1959 vintage pieces. Other Paulin chairs, including the Little Tulip, as well as the Eames oak lounge seat and Harry Bertoia's Diamond & Bird chairs, have also been carefully selected for certain individualized suites Furthermore, the lobby features the beautiful silk lamp Morning Glory, a reminiscence of deep-sea organic medusa, creating the impression of a floating wave in a window in-casement. Each bedroom features beds by renowned Flou company, custom built mattresses and exclusively designed linens. Wall-mounted lamps, bedside tables, floor and reading lamps were carefully selected from the Tolomeo collection by Artemide. To pamper your feet, Hotel Gault had heated floors installed in all bathrooms. Enjoy phenomenal white square washbasins from Duravit featuring superior quality chrome faucets designed by Arne Jacobsen.
